If you apply for a new passport or want a renewed passport in 2021, you are likely to get an e-passport embedded with an electronic microprocessor chip.

Yes, it is said that the central government has initiated such a process, and after issuing 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports on a practical basis with chips, the government has now begun the process of issuing e-passports to all citizens and selecting an agency to set up IT infrastructure and facilities.

The central government has set up an agency dedicated unit and processes for making personal e-passports that can be distributed from 10,000 to 20,000 per hour.

The National Information Center, working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) to select an agency to establish an IT infrastructure and solution for the e-personalization of passports, issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) on Wednesday, issuing e-passports only at the MEA headquarters for diplomatic and official passports.

But now, all 36 passport offices in India offer e-passports after incorporating the e-passport personalization system into the existing passport distribution system in all passport offices. E-passports are said to be based on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standard to ensure interoperability between countries.
